Rachel Adipoās journey in poultry farming is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of community support. From facing initial challenges to scaling her farm through strategic training and cost-sharing schemes, Rachelās story offers valuable lessons for aspiring and established poultry farmers alike.
Rachelās journey began with significant hurdles. Like many small-scale farmers, she faced financial constraints, limited access to quality feed and veterinary services, and a lack of technical knowledge. These challenges threatened the sustainability of her poultry farm in Busia, a region known for its agricultural potential but also its economic disparities.
"The beginning was tough. I had to learn everything from scratch, and the financial burden was immense. But I was determined to succeed," Rachel recalls.
A turning point in Rachelās journey came when she enrolled in a training program offered by MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates). The program provided her with essential skills in poultry management, biosecurity, and financial planning. Additionally, the cost-sharing scheme allowed her to access affordable, high-quality feed and vaccines, significantly improving the health and productivity of her flock.
"The training and cost-sharing scheme were game-changers. I learned how to manage my farm efficiently and reduce costs, which greatly improved my profitability," Rachel shares.
